Sports briefs for January 20, 2004

Antonius Moses Seram, 20, became the latest Indonesian boxer to die after being hurt in a bout. Seram died Monday night in Jakarta, a week after being knocked out in the eighth round of a junior flyweight bout with Kaichon Sor Vorapin of Thailand.

Deaths of Indonesian fighters -- five in an 18-month period -- prompted the World Boxing Council to impose a six-month ban in December 2001 on Indonesians fighting in WBC-sanctioned bouts outside the country.

The ban was lifted in July 2002 provided Indonesia forms a boxing commission to monitor bouts and imposes WBC safety rules. Since then, at least one other boxer has died.

The death toll has been attributed to lax medical supervision, use of illegal amphetamines by fighters, mismatches by promoters and dishonest fight histories of boxers.
