Letter: Local jobs outlook is bleak
Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 | 8:55 a.m.
Contrary to what we are told, I find the outlook bleak for employment growth in Las Vegas. Look into the employment section of this newspaper, and you will discover that many of the jobs offered are low paying and have no benefits. Many others are in the fields of telemarketing and auto sales, where the only pay is your commission. A family can get pretty hungry waiting for dad to make that first sale.
Obtaining and paying for the numerous work cards is confusing and a financial burden. Employers often treat their employees poorly and fire them at will. Why not, when there are dozens waiting to take their place? Apply for just about any advertised job and you find yourself among many others as desperate as yourself; the competition is fierce.
Every morning I wake up hoping my husband will get to keep his low-paying job another day. Now President Bush would like to give these jobs to illegals, stating that "No American wants to do them." If that is true, why is there a line out the door whenever I go to apply for one?
