The nation honors slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. In 1983 the third Monday in January became the federal holiday for King's birthday, which falls on Jan. 15. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Here's what is open and closed on Monday:
SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable TV. Open: Sprint, Southwest Gas.
GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District, Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service. Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service.
NEWSPAPER: SUN offices open, afternoon editions published and delivered as usual.
TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizen Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).
LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, North Las Vegas District, Henderson District, Boulder City District.
GARBAGE: Republic Services pickups as usual.
MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Monday.
FINANCES: Closed: Brokerage firms, most banks (some branches may be open because Nevada law allows banks to open on holidays as long as transactions are posted to the next regular business day. Check your local branch.)
PARKING: City's parking-metered spaces free.
