Robbery suspect in custody after brief car chase
Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 | 9:43 a.m.
A robbery suspect led police on a chase early today that ended when the suspect's car slammed into a Metro Police patrol car near Desert Inn Road and Jones Boulevard.
Officer Jose Montoya said a citizen flagged down a patrol officer about 3 a.m. outside a Circle K convenience store at Decatur Boulevard and Edna Avenue and said a man tried to rob him at gunpoint. The would-be victim said the man drove off in a white pickup truck.
Officers spotted the truck moments later and a brief chase ensued. Metro's search helicopter followed the suspect's vehicle from the air, and the patrol units backed off, Montoya said.
The suspect intentionally rammed into a patrol car that was stopped on Duneville Street, less than a mile from where the chase began, Montoya said.
The impact caused the truck to roll on its side and the patrol car was sent into a block wall. The driver was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit. The officer suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
The suspect faces charges of battery with a deadly weapon, felony evading a police officer and attempted robbery, Montoya said.
