Science Camp applications taken

The Nevada Education Department has announced the availability of applications for the 2004 National Youth Science Camp.

Two high school seniors will be chosen to receive a full scholarship to "exchange ideas with scientists and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds."

The students will be involved in a four-week program which includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the country.

Those chosen will also go on three overnight expeditions into national forests, along with a visit to Washington, D.C.

The delegates must not only demonstrate academic achievement in science, but also show potential for thoughtful scientific leadership, the Nevada Education Department said.

The National Youth Science Camp is free. Meals, lodging and round-trip airfare are also provided.

Winners will arrive in Charleston, W.Va., on June 24 and will return on July 19. The camp is held at Bartow in the mountains of eastern West Virginia.

Applications must be received at the Nevada Education Department by Feb. 28. For more information or to receive an application packet, contact Richard N. Vineyard at (775) 687-9195 or rvineyar @nsn.k12.nv.us.

Victim services officer named

CARSON CITY -- Traci Dory was named victim services officer for the state prison system Wednesday by Jackie Crawford, director of the state Corrections Department. The new post was created by the 2003 Legislature.

Among her duties will be notifying victims of parole dates or deaths of offenders. She said she would also try to stop inmates from contacting their victims, as sometimes happens in cases of domestic violence.
