Cabbie sentenced in artifacts case

A 44-year-old Carson City cabdriver was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay more than $19,000 in restitution Monday for her part in the looting of more than 11,000 archaeological artifacts from protected public lands.

Deanne Wilkie was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James Mahan after pleading guilty to receipt of archaeological resources and aiding and abetting.

Wilkie is the third defendant to be sentenced in connection with Operation Indian Rocks, which revealed that more than $500,000 in artifacts had been removed from 13 sites in Nevada. Her former husband, Bobbie Wilkie of Oklahoma, was sentenced last month to 37 months in prison and was ordered to pay $102,364 in restitution.

Frank Embrey of Henderson was sentenced in August to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay $86,196 in restitution.

The final two defendants in the case are scheduled to be sentenced this week.

Jaywalking man struck by car

A 64-year-old jaywalker was critically injured when he was hit by a car about 6 p.m. Monday on Cameron Street near Harmon Avenue, Metro Police said.

Robert Eisen of North Las Vegas was trying to cross Cameron outside the crosswalk when he stepped in front of a 1996 Kia Sephia driven by Daniel Flores, 51, of Las Vegas, police said.

Eisen was taken to University Medical Center. Flores is not expected to face charges.

A man wanted on child molestation

charges in Yuba City, Calif., was arrested Friday near Nellis Boulevard and Harmon Avenue by Metro Police's fugitive detail, Sgt. Dan Flaherty said. California authorities charged Juan Arnelo Petit with child molestation in June 1999, police said.
