Letter: No one should go hungry in U.S.

I saw first lady Laura Bush on TV, appealing for aid in feeding America's hungry children. Mrs. Bush, of course, is well meaning. But I am angry. Every single year billions of dollars are wasted on pork-barrel schemes by elected officials in Congress to ensure their incumbency.
How much food, clothing and shelter would those billions provide? In the richest nation that this planet has ever seen, there is no reason for a single child to go hungry. I wonder how the wastrels in both parties sleep at night.
