Letter: Mandate national service instead of military draft

January 10 - 11, 2004
Instead of the military draft, it is time for this country to institute compulsory national service for all citizens at age 18. After a 13-week boot camp, the person could choose between military service or such options as the U.S. Border Patrol, smoke jumpers, nurses' corps, teachers' corps, construction corps, etc. The choices are endless.
The many needs of this country could be met and at a reasonable price, say $1,000 a month plus base housing, medical and dental care. Those people with disabilities would not be exempt, but could work as dispatchers, clerks or whatever they feel up to attempting. The pride, self-esteem and confidence that come with service would be immeasurable.
I think it is an idea whose time has come and I would like to see someone like Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., get out and champion it.
