Prison guard dismissed

CARSON CITY -- A correctional officer trainee at the state women's prison in North Las Vegas has been dismissed because he started to become too "chummy" with inmates, a state official said Tuesday.
The trainee, who was not identified, spent too much time in the prison yard talking to two prisoners, said Howard Skolnik, assistant director of the Corrections Department.
The firing came months after an inmate became pregnant at the prison. Prison officials say a prison employee may be the father, and he could face criminal charges if DNA tests prove he sired the child.
The prison conducted tests on all 700 inmates but did not find any more who were pregnant.
The North Las Vegas prison is run by Correctional Corp. of America, a private company contracted by the state.
Skolnik said there was no sexual contact between the officer and the two women.
