Council approves market’s plans for chicken killing

Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved the slaughter of live chickens at Liborio Market, but not before Mayor Oscar Goodman lashed out at the market's owners for seeking a waiver on the number of chickens allowed and the time of day they were to be delivered.

"I'm insulted ... this is the first time in four and a half years I've kicked anyone out of my office," he said of attempts by the market owners to convince him to support the waiver.

Allowing the slaughter of live chickens was a controversial item when it first came up in the spring, but the market has since successfully cut down on some of the opposition.

City staff visited similar markets in Los Angeles, reporting that they have systems in place to handle the detritus -- feathers, guts and blood -- from killing birds.

The city and the market owners settled on allowing 50 chickens a day, with deliveries between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and no overnight penning of the birds. The owners were seeking to allow 300 birds, overnight stays and deliveries as early as 4 a.m.

"If there is a problem, we'll review it in three months," said Councilman Gary Reese.
