Kim Clijsters and Xavier Malisse won their singles matches and the mixed doubles today to lead Belgium to a 3-0 victory against Slovakia at the Hopman Cup tournament in Perth, Australia.

France beat Russia 2-1 in the eight-nation event, with Amelie Mauresmo and Fabrice Santoro winning mixed doubles 6-3, 6-4.

The defending champion Americans, with James Blake and Lindsay Davenport, play the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

The top teams in two round-robin groups play in the final on Saturday.

Lady Rebels on a roll

The UNLV women's team will close out its non-conference schedule Sunday at home against Northern Arizona after improving to 10-2 with an 89-67 rout of St. Mary's Saturday at Moraga, Calif. Sophomore guard Sheena Moore tied a school record with seven 3-pointers and ended with a career-high 26 points.

Yankees sign Vasquez

Javier Vasquez, a 27-year-old right-hander acquired by the New York Yankees last month from the Montreal Expos, agreed to a four-year, $45 million contract.

Modano out of lineup

Dallas Stars center Mike Modano will not play tonight at Anaheim because of a groin injury.

Fenech attacked

Hall of Fame boxer Jeff Fenech, a three-time former world champion, was attacked and stabbed in Sydney, Australia. Fenech will require plastic surgery for deep facial cuts.

American triumphs

Todd Lodwick of the United States won a Nordic combined event Sunday in Schonach, Germany, edging overall World Cup leader Ronny Ackermann of Germany by 2 ski lengths.
