Greg Day scored two goals and added an assist Wednesday night as the Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Long Beach Ice Dogs 5-3 at Long Beach Arena. The victory kept the Wranglers six points behind first-place San Diego in the ECHL Pacific Division and reduced their magic number to seven for clinching a playoff berth.
Any combination of Wranglers victories or losses by the fifth-place Bakersfield Condors will put the Wranglers in the playoffs.
Dave Cousineau scored his second goal in as many nights and Jeff Attard and Cam Bristow also scored for the Wranglers at Long Beach. Goalie Marc Magliarditi stopped 26 shots.

Gladiators add kicker
A three-way Arena Football League trade sent kicker Brian Gowins to the Las Vegas Gladiators from the Philadelphia Soul. Defensive specialist Jerold Johnson went from Las Vegas to the Los Angeles Avengers, who sent sent lineman Mike Ulufale to Philadelphia.

In announcing the findings of his school's basketball inquiry, Baylor University president Robert Sloan today accused former coach Dave Bliss of allowing major NCAA infractions, including his paying the tuition of Patrick Dennehy, the player whose shooting death in July spawned the probe.

Shannon Boxx scored three goals and Mia Hamm twice as the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 7-0 in the opening round of the Olympic regional qualifying tournament in San Jose, Costa Rica. Eight teams are competing for two spots.
