Letter: Main goal should be teachers’ pay
Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 | 8:58 a.m.
In regard to the forthcoming initiative by the teachers union: It is not per-pupil funding that starves -- but instead, per-teacher funding.
Elevate the teachers' pay scale to estimable heights, similar to that of doctors and lawyers, and the professional role of our children's educators will no longer be a mere pretense.
Teaching positions, as any occupation fiscally valued by our society, would be assumed by the nation's elite. And if for nothing more than their paycheck, teachers would be held accountable to a degree that would satisfy even President Bush.
Buildings, desks and computers do not teach students. Teachers do. Think it over.
