Workshop held on Spring Valley plan

Local residents, builders and business operators gathered Thursday for an informational workshop to discuss the current stage of the Spring Valley master plan, used to guide the area's growth.
The Spring Valley Land Use and Development master plan will "ensure that (the) community remains a desirable area in which to live, work and recreate," according to the Clark County Department of Comprehensive Planning.
"It protects existing neighborhoods while providing opportunities for growth."
The workshop was the third in a series of open meetings where Clark County staff presented concepts relating to the master plan process.
Clark County planners based Thursday's workshop partly around comments gathered from a previous open house, held last October.
Comments from the 189 surveys returned since the open house showed a desire for more parks in the Spring Valley area.
In response Jeff Harris of Clark County Parks and Recreation Department started the meeting with a presentation of potential park additions throughout Spring Valley.
"Our goal is to have one regional park within five miles of every person's house," Harris said.
Harris also discussed the possible expansion of the Desert Breeze Recreational Center and addition of a regional park.
Another hot topic, depicted from the surveys, was gravel pits.
While nearly every meeting participant agreed they disliked the gravel pits, nothing can be done about them for the next five years, senior planner Chris Dingell said.
"There were a lot of concerns about what could be done about the gravel pits, but we went out there and they've been here since 1989," he said. "So unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about those. But we're working with the community on other issues they are concerned about."
Enterprise resident J.D. Allen supports the master plan, and said his main concern was developers.
"I am concerned about developers and I'm here to listen and see what we can do to stop them," he said.
