Indonesian dies four days after being KO'd
An Indonesian boxer died today after being knocked out during a match four days ago.
Jack Ryan, 23, was knocked out in the eighth round Sunday. He lapsed into a coma and died early today, Indonesian Boxing Commission spokesman Firman Gindu said.
Ryan is the second boxer to die in the past month from injuries sustained during a bout. Indonesia's Antonius Moses Seram died last month after he was knocked out. In all, eight Indonesian boxers have died since 2001.
The death toll has been attributed to lax medical supervision, use of illegal amphetamines by fighters, mismatches by promoters and dishonest fight histories of boxers.
Capitals trade Bondra
The Washington Capitals resumed their salary purge by trading all-time leading scorer Peter Bondra to Ottawa, giving the Senators another potent offensive threat in their drive toward the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Capitals received prospect center Brooks Laich and a 2005 second-round pick for Bondra.
Blazers fine Woods
Forward Qyntel Woods was fined by the Portland Trail Blazers for conduct detrimental to the team after the driver of a car he was riding in during the weekend was arrested for driving under the influence.
U.S. men defeated
The U.S. soccer team dropped a 1-0 exhibition game Wednesday night in Amsterdam to the Netherlands, one of Europe's strongest sides. It was a rare opportunity for U.S. players in European leagues and in MLS to unite before the start of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in June. This was the first time the full U.S. team has been together since losing to Germany in the quarterfinals of the last World Cup.
Rebels 4th in Hawaii
The UNLV men's team was in fourth place at 8-under-par, four strokes behind leader New Mexico after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wahiawa, Hawaii. Travis Whisman shot a 3-under to lead the Rebels.
