Council approves new homes

Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004 | 9:18 a.m.

About 2,000 new homes will cover almost 385 acres in northern North Las Vegas under a development plan approved by the City Council on Wednesday.

The development by Centex Homes is planned for the southwest corner of the intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Tropical Parkway, west of Interstate 15.

The development will include 40 acres of parks and will consist of detached single-family homes ranging in price from the $170,000 to around $300,000, Centex President Brad Burns said.

Construction on the first homes could begin in nine months, with the first residents moving in nine months later.

The council voted 4-0 on Wednesday to approve zoning changes for the property, which had been zoned for industrial uses. Councilwoman Shari Buck was absent.

Burns said the industrial zoning just didn't fit with the residential zoning for the surrounding property, and the council agreed.

"This property is surrounded by residential, only this little pocket was industrial," Burns said.

Mayor Michael Montandon said the property probably never would have been developed for industrial uses, and Councilwoman Stephanie Smith agreed.

"We've already changed the zoning all around that, we can't leave it as a last bastion of industrial," Smith said, adding that an industrial use would conflict with plans for a new casino and residential developments planned for the properties in that area.
