Veterans eligible for high school diplomas

Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 | 10:06 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- Veterans who joined the military or were drafted and did not complete high school are now eligible to apply for a high school diploma.

The state Office of Veterans Services said Tuesday the forms are now available to apply for a diploma for those who served from Sept. 16, 1940, until May 7, 1975. That was the duration of the draft.

Chuck Fulkerson, director of the state office, said he did not have any idea how many might qualify in Nevada. The only figure he has is that 21,000 Nevadans enlisted or were drafted during World War II. He did not have any figures for the Korean War or for Vietnam.

And he does not know how many of the 21,000 left high school early.

To qualify, the veterans must have a copy of his or her honorable discharge and list the name of the school attended in Nevada. If the veteran lives in Nevada and attended a high school in another state, he must supply an affidavit of the name of the school.

The applications should be submitted to the Office of Veterans Services, 1201 Terminal Way, Room 215, Reno NV.
