The Gobel Lowden Veterans Center and Museum was burglarized Sunday, the director said this morning.
The burglar alarm was set off about 4 p.m. Metro Police found the museum, located at 3333 Cambridge St. near Desert Inn Road, ransacked.
Museum director Ed Gobel said a German luger handgun from World War I or World War II was stolen, along with some museum records. He is still trying to determine what else was stolen.
Gobel estimated the vandalism damage at $5,000. It's a major blow to the museum, a nonprofit organization that relies on donations, he said.
"This is really going to hurt," Gobel said this morning.
Max Cleland, Vietman veteran and former Republican senator from Georgia, may help Gobel raise funds to cover the cost of the damage, Gobel said.
Gobel commended Metro for responding quickly to the burglar alarm, saying it "stopped further damage from being done."
