Man, 79, killed in collision

A 79-year-old Las Vegas man was killed Friday in a traffic accident at the intersection of Ann and Fort Apache roads.

The man was driving east on Ann in a 1985 Toyota pickup truck when a 1991 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 17-year-old Lacy Wood of Las Vegas, failed to stop for the stop sign, police said.

Wood's Jeep hit the left side of the Toyota pickup. The driver of the truck died at MountainView Hospital.

Police said the cause of the collision appears to be a stop sign violation on the part of Wood, but no charges have been filed pending an investigation.

Neither Wood nor her 16-year-old passenger reported injuries.

Driver arrested after fatal crash

A Las Vegas man was charged with felony driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and felony hit-and-run Sunday after his 2001 Hyundai Sonata ran a red light at Flamingo Road and Durango Drive and killed the driver of a 1999 Suzuki Esteem, police said.

Metro Police allege 23-year-old Robert Tromly was driving the Hyundai westbound on Flamingo about 7 a.m. when he failed to stop at a red traffic signal. The 22-year-old driver of the Suzuki Esteem entered the intersection on a green traffic signal.

Tromly's vehicle struck the left side of the Suzuki, police said, fatally injuring the Suzuki driver. Tromly fled the area on foot, police said.

Tromly was taken into custody several minutes later with minor injuries.

It was the 17th traffic fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.

Coucilman wants swap meet control

Las Vegas Councilman Gary Reese is seeking an ordinance to require new swap meets in Las Vegas to get a special use permit before they open. The ordinance will be read into the record at Wednesday's City Council meeting, the first step in introducing new rules.

A public hearing generally takes place within 30 days of the first reading.

"When somebody opens up a swap meet, I want to control what goes on and there needs to be one person responsible," Reese said. "I got two swap meets inside older buildings and I got nothing but headaches from them.

"If I get any more, I want to have it to where I have some control over that," said Reese, who added that current swap meets will not be affected by the ordinance.

Gibson prepares State of the City

Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson said he will discuss education, growth and related issues during his annual State of the City address scheduled for noon Thursday at the Anthem Center in Henderson.

Gibson said he will also "review the challenges we face as a city," during the speech, which he estimated will last about 25 minutes.

The mayor declined to go into details about his speech, saying he is still refining the address.

The address is scheduled to begin at noon, and is being hosted by the Henderson Chamber of Commerce.

The Anthem Center is at 2450 Hampton Road.
