The University of Washington soon will receive a notice of official inquiry from the NCAA, sources said yesterday, and that list of infractions will include a "lack of institutional control" charge, an allegation that could lead to severe sanctions against the athletic department, the Seatte Post-Intelligencer reported today.
The NCAA's charges will function separately from -- and potentially override -- the Pac-10's findings against Washington and former football coach Rick Neuheisel, investigations stemming from a basketball tournament betting pool scandal and other violations within the program.
The Pac-10, which previously charged the university with "failure to monitor" its athletic program, roughly equivalent to a lack of institutional control, is expected to deliver its verdict to the school and Neuheisel after an executive council meeting on March 12 in Los Angeles.
Once the NCAA committee on infractions issues its separate findings, the university and any individuals named have 90 days to respond.
