RTC approves new bus route, upgrades

The Regional Transportation Commission approved one new route and increased service on three existing routes Wednesday.
The passage of the $2.7 billion tax package for Clark County transportation last year by popular vote and the Legislature is allowing the RTC to reverse service cuts made last year to the Citizens Area Transit bus system, RTC transit operations administrator June DeVoll told the board.
"The funds are beginning to flow and we can add services," she said.
De Voll told the board that the agency intends to add more services, but wants to ensure that they are needed.
Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, a board member, asked if more service could be provided to parts of his city.
The service increases approved Wednesday include increasing the frequency of buses on Route 204, which serves Sahara Avenue from Fort Apache Road to Hollywood Boulevard, from twice an hour to three times an hour; increasing the frequency of Route 206 buses on Charleston Boulevard from Town Center Drive to Hollywood from three times to four times an hour; and adding two-way service on Route 214, a circular route that serves neighborhoods just north of downtown.
The board also approved a new route, 551, which will go from the Sahara station of the new monorail system to the Downtown Transportation Center with one intermediary stop at the Fremont Street Experience. Instead of the usual $1.25 fare, fares on the new route will be 50 cents.
DeVoll said the route would begin operating the same day as the monorail begins running. The Las Vegas Monorail Co. has said it plans to begin regular operation of the monorail in March.
