Holiday Closings

Presidents Day since 1971 has been observed on the third Monday in February. It is intended to honor all presidents. Initially it was two holidays honoring the birthdays of George Washington on Feb. 22 and Abraham Lincoln on Feb. 12. Here's what is open and closed on Monday:
SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
UTILITIES: Closed: Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Open: Sprint, Cox Communications cable television.
GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County public schools, Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service. Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service.
NEWSPAPER: Sun afternoon editions published and delivered as usual. Sun offices open.
TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizen Area Transit: Buses on holiday/weekend schedule (fewer buses on fixed routes).
LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City District.
GARBAGE: Republic Services pickups as usual.
MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Monday.
FINANCES:Closed: Brokerage firms, most banks. (Note: Nevada law now allows banks to open on holidays as long as they post transactions to the the next regular business day. Check your bank branch for potential holiday hours.)
PARKING: Free parking in metered spaces.
