New voting machines wait

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 | 8:39 a.m.

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- The state Board of Examiners Tuesday delayed a vote on a $9.2 million contract for the purchase of new voting machines for Washoe County and rural Nevada.

Renee Parker, chief deputy secretary of state, said some details need to be ironed out in the contract with Sequoia Voting Systems Inc. of Oakland, Calif.

She said an estimated 1,800 machines are expected to be delivered next month and the training of county officials will be on schedule for the September primary election.

Sequoia supplies touch screen voting units and each will create a paper record for recounts.

Clark County already uses Sequoia, but the secretary of state's office said it will receive some of the units that create paper records.

Parker said she hopes the contract can be signed within the next week.
