KNPR, KLAS to make news together

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004 | 8:13 a.m.

In an effort to expand its content, KNPR FM-88.9 is linking with KLAS Channel 8 for local news reports.

As part of the one-year agreement, KLAS will provide unlimited, non-exclusive access to all its locally originated news content to KNPR.

"This agreement with 'Channel 8 Eyewitness News' is another historic milestone in the development of the News 88.9 KNPR into the heritage radio news station in Southern Nevada," Lamar Marchese, Nevada Public Radio's president and general manager, said in a statement.

Additionally, the websites for KLAS and KNPR will be linked, and both stations will include shared local election coverage later this year for the presidential election.

KLAS Vice President Bob Stoldal said the deal works well for both stations.

"It provides another outlet for 'Channel 8 Eyewitness News' and helps KNPR with local news content that it otherwise could not afford to produce itself," he said in a statement. "Last year's flash floods emphasized the importance of radio's portability in getting information quickly to people who might be in peril."

KNPR recently split into two radio stations: the all-news format 88.9 and the all-classical KCNV 89.7-FM.

KLAS, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas, also provides news to KTUD Channel 25 (Cox cable channel 12), and is a partner in Las Vegas ONE with Cox Communications and the Las Vegas Sun.
