Four Nevada students win trip to U.N.

Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 | 9:43 a.m.

Four Nevada high school students were announced as recipients of the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth award, given by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in conjunction with the Nevada Education Department.

The award is based on character, academic success, extracurricular activities, leadership ability, interest in the community and world affairs, civic welfare and a willingness to report on their trip.

Ariel Shalin, a junior at Silverado High School in Las Vegas, Bonnie Jane Longoria, a junior at Gerlach High School and Brooke Gauthier, a sophomore at Battle Mountain High School, are this year's recipients of the trip.

Kelly Paul, a junior at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, was the alternate.

Marjorie Beaupre, a junior from Virginia City, was sponsored for the trip by her lodge.

The award is worth $1,500 per student and is provided by The Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodges of Nevada.

The focus of the 10-day trip is to bring students together to observe and study the United Nations, said Bill and Dorothy Knight, co-chairs for the pilgrimage.

The all-expense-paid trip will provide students an opportunity to tour various agencies and departments of the United Nations and learn of its many accomplishments, they said.

Participants will also visit historical and metropolitan sites of New York.
