Chopper’ charged after customer confrontation

Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 | 9:42 a.m.

A local car salesman and television personality known as "the Chopper" will face criminal charges stemming from a confrontation with a disgruntled customer.

Joshua Daniel Towbin, 28, general manager of the Towbin Dodge Superstore, faces a gross misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct in connection with the Nov. 1 incident.

Towbin is known for his television commercials in which he promises to "chop" prices on vehicles.

John Cleary, 46, who had bought a Dodge truck from the dealership, claims Towbin threatened to assault him during a dispute near the Henderson dealership over a $2,500 discrepancy in his contract. He claims Towbin blocked in his vehicle with a Cadillac Escalade, preventing him from leaving the area, that employees tore up signs he had placed in his truck and that Towbin kicked his truck.

Towbin faces one to six years in prison on the false imprisonment charge. He will appear before a Henderson judge on Feb. 19. Towbin's attorney, Dominic Gentile, could not immediately be reached for comment.
