New ordinance prohibits test drives on residential streets

Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 | 9:24 a.m.

A new Las Vegas ordinance prohibits the test driving of vehicles from car dealerships on residential streets.

The Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to pass the ordinance that will enable the city to take action against auto dealerships' business licenses, including levying fines of up to $1,000 for each offense of allowing customers to test drive automobiles on streets narrower than 80 feet.

However, the ban does not include the "necessary use of a residential street" to gain access to a non-residential street as long as the vehicle does not exceed 15 mph on the residential street, the ordinance says.

The ban is expected to affect areas such as West Sahara Avenue where car dealerships line both sides of the major artery and residential developments are prominent on adjacent streets.

Mayor Oscar Goodman and Councilwoman Janet Moncrief sponsored the ordinance that also requires dealerships to file test drive routes with the city's Planning and Development Department.

The council had no public discussion on the bill prior to passing it.
