The Las Vegas City Council unanimously ratified the appointment of Orlando Sanchez as the new director of Neighborhood Services, a department that went without its director and a top administrator for several months following turmoil involving city pay given to Assemblyman Wendell Williams during the legislative session..
Williams, an administrative officer in the department, was fired, and former director Sharon Segerblom reassigned to a different city department, following an investigation that determined Williams was overpaid by the city while he was serving in the Legislature. Sanchez, 40, will make $101,913 a year plus benefits in his new position. He previously worked as manager of facilities and maintenance and has been with the city since 1988. Sanchez narrowly missed being appointed to the Las Vegas City Council in the spring of 2001. Then-councilman Michael McDonald had pushed for Sanchez to be appointed to fill the Ward 6 seat that had been added to the council but the appointment went to Michael Mack.
