Marino runs reverse on job with Dolphins

Three weeks after being named senior vice president of football operations for the Miami Dolphins, Dan Marino told owner H. Wayne Huizenga Tuesday that he had made a mistake and wanted to resign.

Marino, 42, will likely stick with his television career. He has been a popular analyst for CBS and HBO. He never spent a day in the office in his since his appointment, but did travel to Mobile, Ala., last month to join in player interviews and evaluations at the Senior Bowl.

"I knew this would involve a significant lifestyle change," Marino said is a prepared statement, "but after further reflection, it became clear that those adjustments were ones that my family and I are not prepared to make."

Huizenga said the Dolphins will attempt to fill Marino's position before next season with a "football person."

Dodgers eye Maddux

The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't yet made a contract offer but conceded that they are interested in free-agent pitcher Greg Maddux, 38. The Los Angeles Daily News reported that a two-year, $14 million contract offer was being considered. The Chicago Cubs are the other team reportedly interested in Maddux, a Las Vegas native and Valley High School graduate.

Jones set to run again

U.S. sprint star Marion Jones plans to resume her career Friday in the 60-meter dash at the Melrose Games in New York. It will be her first competition in more than a year since taking leave to have a baby.

De La Hoya has a plan

Oscar De La Hoya, who lost the 154-pound world championship to Shane Mosley in September in Las Vegas, said he will return to the ring June 5. No opponent was announced.

Rafalski picked

Defenseman Brian Rafalski was named to replace injured New Jersey Devils teammate Scott Stevens in Sunday's NHL All-Star Game.

Bulldogs suspended

Senior forwards Renaldo Major and Jonathan Woods were suspended by Fresno State coach Ray Lopes for violating team policies.
