Clinton plans LV fund-raiser

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Las Vegas on May 17 for a Democratic fund-raiser, though details haven't been worked out on where and when the event will be held, said Jon Summers, communications director for the state Democratic Party.

Clinton has been a frequent visitor to Nevada and, in 2000, helped raise $525,000 for the state and National Democratic Party.

One gang rape suspect from LV

One of three men arrested in the Salt Lake City area after photographs were found depicting a gang rape of an unconscious 13-year-old girl is from Las Vegas and has gang ties, Metro Police said.

Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies had reported Monday that all three of the men arrested were gang members from Las Vegas.

Javier Martinez, who also goes by Javier Lugo, 22, is a member of the Barrio Naked City gang in Las Vegas, Lt. Lewis Roberts said. He was arrested along with Andres Sanpedro, 21, and Vargilia Bautista Cruz, 25, on state and federal charges of rape, sexual abuse and child pornography.

Metro Police arrested Martinez several times in 2002 on charges of possession of a stolen car, possession of a stolen gun and obstruction.

An employee of a photo shop called police last Thursday after noticing a minor in sexually explicit photos with several men.

The men were arrested after police traced a license plate number in one of the photographs to a Utah residence.

Sanpedro allegedly told investigators he routinely had sex with women in the abandoned house, Utah authorities said.

Authorities said Martinez told them that the girl "was out of it" while she was being assaulted and that one of the other men probably drugged her.

The girl told police she had no memory of the assault, but confirmed that she was the one in the photographs.

Man arrested on sex assault charge

Metro Police arrested a 38-year-old man Monday after a 17-year-old girl reported that he fondled her, Lt. Jeff Carlson said.

Daniel Kee was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count each of sexual assault and open and gross lewdness.

Carlson said the investigation began when 17-year-old girl told police Kee fondled her Dec. 5. Police allege he had juveniles stay overnight at his house and gave alcohol to 15 to 20 minors ranging in age from 12 to 18 years old.

Detectives learned that Kee frequently had juveniles sleep at his home and are concerned there may be more victims.

Anyone with information about this incident or any additional incidents of molestation involving Kee are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Detective Courtney at 229-3421.

Vice chancellor of finance named

A new vice chancellor for finance and administration will join the Nevada System of Higher Education later this month.

Regents approved the appointment of Buster Neel Friday after a search committee led by Nevada State College of Henderson President Kerry Romesburg recommended Neel.

Neel comes to Nevada from Boise State University, where he served as vice president for finance and administration. Previously, he worked in a similar position for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

As vice chancellor, Neel will oversee all budget preparation, capital planning, risk management, facilities planning, and audits, Chancellor Jane Nichols said.

The Reno-based position also works closely with the Legislature and the governor's office on the system's budget.

Neel is replacing former Vice Chancellor Dan Miles, who left the position in August. Larry Eardley had been serving at the interim vice chancellor of finance and administration since Miles resigned.
