Letter: Bush is targeting Social Security
Monday, Feb. 2, 2004 | 9:06 a.m.
President Bush is being pressured by right-wingers to announce a drastic "reform" of Social Security before the election. This reform, it has been rumored, will include a severe income and assets test, which would dismantle Social Security as an insurance program and make it just another welfare or charity program for the very poor seniors who would still get less than the Social Security or SSI benefits they get now. This reform would be a giveaway to Wall Street, disguised under the name "personal savings accounts."
For obvious reasons, Bush will not announce this cruel plan before the election. So seniors should not take the chance and let him be elected for the first time (he was appointed last time).
