Three local students received not only their degrees, but also Army commissions following UNLV's recent winter commencement.
Commissioned as Army second lieutenants were Patricio Cordero, Valley High School class of 1998 and son of Nelly and Maurice Cordero of Las Vegas; Patrick Naughton Jr., son Jean Naughton of Las Vegas; and Paul Prunier, Las Vegas High School class of 1998 and son of Patricia and William Prunier of Las Vegas,
Cordero, who graduated from UNLV with a bachelor of arts in criminal justice, was selected for air defense artillery training and will report for duty in August.
Naughton, who now holds a bachelor's degree in history, will train in military intelligence and reports for duty in June.
Prunier, who received his degree in political science, has been assigned to the Transportation Corps and will report to the 25th Transportation Company based in Las Vegas in August.
Along with their academic studies at UNLV, the three new officers each completed either a two- or four-year program leading to a commission in the Army, Army Reserve or Nevada Army National Guard.
All completed an advanced training camp and the Army ROTC advanced course program at UNLV. The advanced course focuses on leadership, military tactics, administration, organization and management. Field training in the program includes rifle marksmanship, physical training and leadership exercises.
