Consumer confidence jumps
The Conference Board, a New York-based business information group, reported that its index of consumer confidence leapt by nearly 10 points to 102.3 in December from 92.6 in November.

Horvath was crossing Jones Boulevard near Tropicana Avenue about 7:10 p.m. Dec. 15 when he failed to yield the right-of-way to a 2002 Mercury. The collision threw the boy and his bike forward, and he was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.
