Las Vegas officials announce Moncrief recall election dates

Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 | 9:35 a.m.

The recall election of Las Vegas Ward 1 City Councilwoman Janet Moncrief will be Jan. 25, with early voting scheduled for Jan. 21 and 22, the city announced this morning.

Ward 1 residents interested in running against Moncrief have until 5 p.m. Jan. 5 to file a nominating petition at City Hall. Potential candidates must have been Ward 1 residents as of Dec. 6.

Vicki Quinn, an activist who has fought for increasing handicapped access to public places, has already filed a successful nominating petition. She now has until Jan. 5 to formally accept a spot on the ballot.

Former Clark County School Board member Lois Tarkanian has said she is working to collect enough signatures to appear on the ballot.

A citizens group successfully petitioned for the recall saying its members were unhappy with Moncrief's alleged ineffectiveness -- they said the councilwoman should have been able to block an office building going into their neighborhood -- and pending criminal charges for allegedly filing fraudulent campaign finance reports.

New voters have until Jan. 8 to register to vote in the recall.

Absentee ballots must be requested by Jan. 18.

The city will mail voters notice of their Election Day polling place.
