Editorial: Growth adds to priority

WEEKEND EDITION

December 24 - 26, 2004

There is another important reason why it's critical for Nevada to be part of a regionally devised Colorado River agreement -- the U.S. Census Bureau announced last week that for the 18th straight year we are the fastest-growing state in the country.

While growth has its challenges -- mainly, keeping up with it in terms of roads, schools and social services, and trying to maintain a healthy environment -- it is largely beneficial. The economy is humming compared to the rest of the country and our larger population is generating more and better services in both the private and public sectors. Growth is an industry here unto itself, contributing to a high quality of life.

A severe shortage of water, though, could very quickly end our growth, and along with it our healthy economy. It's almost certain that the persistent drought will force a cutback in the amount of Colorado River water that is shared by seven states, including Nevada. A drought plan in which Nevada has a say would undoubtedly be better for us than a plan imposed by the federal government.
