Police search for SUV after fatal shooting

Metro Police are looking for a customized sport utility vehicle that might lead them to the person who shot and killed a 22-year-old man in the street Tuesday night near Twain Avenue and Paradise Road.

It appears to have been an armed robbery gone bad because along with the vehicle, some personal items were stolen from the victim, Lt. Tom Monahan of Metro's homicide section said.

Detectives are also investigating whether the victim fired shots at the robbers, he said. Although no weapon was found with the victim, there was evidence at the scene that suggests he might have tried to defend himself from his attackers.

The crime occurred about 11:15 p.m. in the 3800 block of Royal Crest Street. The victim's friend told homicide detectives that she heard the sound of gunshots outside shortly after the man left for the store.

She went outside and found the victim in the street suffering from gunshot wounds, and his vehicle was gone, Sgt. Rocky Alby said.

It is described as a white 1994 GMC Yukon with tinted windows, custom 24-inch "spinner" wheels and flat television monitors mounted in the rear seats. It had Nevada license plates 647RWC. It was last seen heading north on Royal Crest toward Twain.

The victim's identity was not released this morning, and the autopsy had not been completed, officials said.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call police at 229-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
