Pediatrician accused in porn case found victim through Big Brother program

Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004 | 9:40 a.m.

The pediatrician accused of child molestation and child porn possession told Metro Police that one of his victims was a local boy he had met through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada, according to the arrest report.

Dr. David Glenn Evans, 32, a resident at the University of Nevada School of Medicine since the summer, worked at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital, but police have not uncovered any evidence linking him to any children he met through his job.

Evans was charged Friday with a total of 61 felonies, including six counts of sexually assaulting a minor, 10 counts of lewdness with a minor and 40 counts of child pornography possession. He was scheduled to appear in court this morning.

If found guilty as charged, Evans could be sentenced to life in prison.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada released a statement Monday saying Evans was thoroughly screened before being accepted as a Big Brother and the organization has "zero tolerance for abuse."

The organization is cooperating with police and continuing to refine its practices to ensure the safety of children, according to the statement.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news," the statement says. "We express our sympathy to all of those affected."

Police began investigating Evans on Dec. 16 after his roommate called police and said that while using Evans' laptop he had found a folder containing more than 100 sexually explicit images of an adolescent boy.

Evans appeared in some of the pictures, the arrest report says, and it appeared they were taken during a camping trip.

Police obtained a warrant to search Evans' home in the 10000 block of Deerfield Beach Avenue, just east of Alexander Road at the Las Vegas Beltway.

In an interview with detectives, police said Evans told them the pictures were taken in 2001 at Bear River Lake in California. The boy was 13 at the time.

Evans admitted to taking all of the pictures and that he and the boy swam together naked, but that no sexual contact occurred between them, the arrest report says.

He also told detectives about another boy -- his "Little Brother." Evans said took inappropriate pictures of the boy he was mentoring, the report says.

Detectives went to the boy's elementary school and asked him about his relationship with Evans. The boy told police he has spent the night at Evans' home and that he also went camping with him in September, according to the arrest report.

The boy said about a week after the camping trip Evans began touching him and molesting him.

On at least three occasions, the boy told police, Evans took naked pictures of the boy, the report says.

Evans, who is from San Jose, Calif., graduated earlier this year from a university in the West Indies and enrolled in the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

A biography on the university Web site says he has volunteered as a youth sports coach, rape crisis counselor and mentor for underprivileged children. He also spent two years as a volunteer in homeless shelters and orphanages in Italy.

He remained jailed this morning at the Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $325,000 bail.
