Evans quits top job with Desert Pines

Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 | 9:05 a.m.

Desert Pines football coach Leon Evans resigned last week. Evans said he is trying to pursue a career coaching college football.

"I'm glad the school gave me an opportunity to be their football coach," Evans said. "I coached some great athletes at DP, and as a coach I hope I brought some pride to our school and our community."

In his three years at Desert Pines, Evans took the Jaguars to the state semifinals twice. In 2002, they lost to McQueen in the state championship, and were defeated at Reno in 2003. The Jaguars had a 24-13 overall record in his tenure as coach.

The Desert Pines vacancy came just as Coronado promoted assistant coach Alex Moore to head coach. Moore replaced Paul Berg, who decided to focus exclusively on basketball. Berg is also the Cougars' boys basketball coach. The vacancy at Sierra Vista, whose coach resigned in early November, remains the only other unfilled 4A position in Southern Nevada.
