Child molestation has been added to the list of charges filed against a Las Vegas pediatrician who allegedly had sexually explicit photographs of an adolescent boy on his home computer.
Dr. David Glenn Evans, 32, was arrested Friday morning on 40 counts of possession of child pornography. Evans, a resident at the University of Nevada School of Medicine since the summer, worked at University Medical Center and Sunrise Hospital, police said.
As members of the Las Vegas Internet Crimes Against Children task force, composed of Metro Police detectives and FBI agents, continued their investigation they uncovered evidence suggesting that Evans had sexually assaulted a child, Sgt. Russ Shoemaker said.
Evans was re-booked Friday night on four counts of sexual assault of a victim under 14; 10 counts of lewdness of a minor; three counts of use of a minor in production of pornography; and two counts of open and gross lewdness.
If convicted, Evans could face life in prison, police said.
Either Evans or someone else snapped the photographs and either scanned them or downloaded them, Lt. Jeff Carlson of Metro's sexual assault section said.
Police believe they were taken several years ago and don't appear to have been taken in a hospital or medical office setting, he said.
Amy Dirks Stevens, spokeswoman for Sunrise Hospital, and Cheryl Persinger, spokeswoman for University Medical Center, referred questions to Dr. Jim Lenhart, Evans' supervisor at the university, but he declined to comment.
University officials hire, screen and supervise residents, Stevens said.
Evans obtained a Nevada medical license in July. He lives in the 10000 block of Alexander Road.
A biography on the university Web site says Evans was born in San Jose, Calif., and graduated earlier this year from Saint Georges University in Grenada, West Indies.
He earned an associate's degree from Ricks College in Idaho and a bachelor of science degree in exercise physiology from Brigham Young University.
"David has a long list of volunteer experiences, from youth sports coach to rape crisis counselor, to mentor for underprivileged children," the Web site says.
Evans also spent two years as a volunteer in homeless shelters and orphanages in Italy.
"He is deeply dedicated to children and plans to continue working to help the most disadvantaged," according to the Web site.
Evans was being held this morning in the Clark County Detention Center in lieu of $325,000 bail.
Police are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information about Evans is asked to call the task force at 229-3421, the FBI at 385-1281 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
