Game 4 lineup card goes for $165,000
The Boston Red Sox lineup card from Game 4 of the 2004 World Series brought a site-record bid of $165,000 on MLB.com.
A collection of World Series championship memorabilia went on sale Dec. 7 on MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball. The bidding for the lineup card, which ended Wednesday night, was a record for a game-used and autographed item. The bidder was not identified.
Other Red Sox memorabilia included a game-issued World Series base signed by series MVP Manny Ramirez, an ALCS base signed by series MVP David Ortiz, and baseballs and bases from all four World Series games against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Also auctioned were framed World Series locker name plates of Derek Lowe, Trot Nixon and Keith Foulke, and commemorative home plates from Games 2 and 3 of the World Series that were used for first pitch ceremonies.
Cal receiver cleared
The San Francisco Police Department decided to drop weapons charges against California receiver David Gray, who was arrested last week after a fight outside a nightclub. Coach Jeff Tedford said Gray had rejoined the team and would return to practice today in preparation for the Bears' Dec. 30 date in the Holiday Bowl against Texas Tech.
Ex-Olympian wins
Former U.S. Olympian Brian Viloria knocked out Angel Priolo of Colombia in the seventh round of their flyweight bout in Los Angeles. Viloria, who was a member of the 2000 U.S. team, improved his record to 16-0.
BYU looks for AD
Now that BYU has a new football coach, administrators can start looking for his boss. BYU advancement vice president Fred Skousen said the search for a new athletic director began officially Thursday, three months after the university announced it was streamlining its men's and women's athletic departments into one. BYU hopes to have the new head of the athletic department in place by March.
Fairfield OK
Fairfield will not be sanctioned by the NCAA after an independent investigation into its basketball program found no major violations. Last year, several former players accused the coaching staff of giving cash to players, falsifying drug tests, and doing schoolwork for members of the team.
Gophers vs. Cardinal
Minnesota will meet Stanford on Saturday in the NCAA women's championship match at Long Beach, Calif. Minnesota eliminated Southern Cal and Stanford beat Washington in Thursday's semifinal matches.
Auction ethics
A group of horse industry officials announced a new code of ethics for thoroughbred auctions including several measures to help protect buyers from potential fraud during auctions.
