Letter: Oil, not freedom, true policy goal

In response to the Dec. 15 letter from Betty Jean Waite, who believes that George Bush's policies promote freedom around the globe, I would like to know how she explains the tangible enmity of our "allies." Is it because they hate freedom, or because they understand that where we attempt to impose our way of life is quite selective, having something to do with oil wealth?
If that is not enough to demonstrate that President Bush is completely disingenuous, why do we tolerate and trade with China and Vietnam, communist countries? Why only Cuba as the political pariah? Time for Ms. Waite to wake up to the reality of George Bush.
Bush not only dropped the ball on Iraq because of bad advice and an absence of vision, he also has created a social, economic and political catastrophe of such proportion -- and one in which our boys are dying each day -- that it will be years before any sanity and stability return to the region, let alone freedom.
