Wildcats can’t help but score

Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004 | 9:41 a.m.

There have been a fair amount of lopsided soccer games this year, mostly by Bonanza's boys' team in autumn, but this week's Canyon Springs girls' game at Las Vegas High was a record breaker.

The Wildcats outscored first-year Canyon Springs 14-1 Monday night at Frank Nails Field. Five Wildcats had more than one goal, and Canyon Springs' lone goal was scored by Lauren Scott.

Las Vegas coach Tresa Schilder said her team tried to avoid that much of a blowout -- Vegas was up 9-0 at the half -- but the bounces just kept going the Wildcats' way.

"I was telling the girls to relax, just pass the ball around. I'm not a coach that likes to run the score up, not one to rub it in their face," Schilder said. "We have nine seniors on the team, seven of them were freshmen on the varsity team, so they are really looking forward to the senior season and doing the best they can ... They want people to notice them. Our program is finally starting to get recognition and they want people to notice the program now."

Las Vegas is 5-1 this year.

TRIVIA QUESTION: The Centennial girls' basketball team continues to break all sorts of Class 4A records, and generally are just behind in overall state records. But which school holds every team record kept by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association?

CAROUSEL: Hiring season is under way in local prep football. Three schools -- Sierra Vista, Coronado and Clark -- have posted vacancies and one more is possible before February.

Clark's was filled earlier this week, as the Chargers hired baseball coach Jason Klinger to lead the football team. Clark fired Carlton Lamb last month after going winless over the last two seasons.

Klinger, a former junior varsity coach at Clark, was exuberant over his hiring.

"There's so much talent that hasn't been channeled yet," Klinger said.

He added that Clark's community has started to come back together to offer support to the program.

"What we're working on right now, parents who are not even involved in the football program, that are maybe involved with the magnet program, they're really trying to help out," Klinger said.

Meanwhile, Coronado assistant principal Bob Mars said he hopes to hire a new varsity football coach in early January, after Paul Berg stepped down to focus on coaching boys' basketball. Berg is Coronado's varsity boys' basketball coach.

Mars said around 14 people have applied for the Cougars job, a group that did include head coaches from the Las Vegas area.

Sierra Vista athletic director Larry Goins was unavailable for comment Wednesday, but recent conjecture that Palo Verde defensive coordinator Charlie Jarvis could take the job is untrue. Panthers coach Darwin Rost said Jarvis has not applied for any head coaching jobs.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Mineral County, from Hawthorne. The Lady Serpents hold records for most points scored in a season (2,212 in 2000), most in a half (61 in 1995), quarter (41 in 1998), most 3-pointers made and attempted in a season (142-for-410 in 2001), attempted in a game (28 in 2001), and most made in a game (15 in 2000).

As of Wednesday night, Centennial's girls have 941 points in 11 games this year. The Bulldogs have at least 12 games remaining, depending on how things turn out in two in-season tournaments and the postseason.

RECRUITMENT: Brett Johnson, Green Valley's star WR/DB, visited California last week and has been offered a scholarship by the Pacific-10 school. Oregon State has also offered, and Johnson has visits planned to Corvallis, Ore., as well as UCLA.

Cheyenne running back Torrie Coleman said Wednesday he has Oregon State, Michigan and others on his radar, and is also thinking about having a visit with UNLV.
