Police, detention services to merge
The North Las Vegas City Council authorized merging the city's detention department with the North Las Vegas Police Department Wednesday.
Police Chief Mark Paresi said the merger is sensible, will save money through efficiency, and will improve how the two departments work together.
"We work extremely close. What we do effects them. What they do effects us," he said. "It's better business."
Paresi said the transition will take about six months to go into effect and may take some time to perfect though he doesn't expect it to be difficult.
The result will be one department with roughly 575 employees, he said, about 350 from the police department and 225 from detentions.
Pet pig rules are introduced
An ordinance regulating the keeping of pot-bellied pigs was introduced at the North Las Vegas City Council meeting Wednesday evening.
The ordinance would expand the number of zones in which pot-bellied pigs may be kept so long as they meet certain conditions and are licensed.
Details of the ordinance are available on the city's Web site under agendas. A vote on the ordinance is scheduled for the council's Jan. 5 meeting.
