UNLV engineering students who designed an air filter for cars that improves fuel efficiency and never has to be changed won the $2,500 grand prize in the departmental design contest, held last week.
Seniors June Light, Daniel Lowe and Matthew Voegele will split the purse for their design, which uses electrostatic power rather than a barrier to keep grit from entering a car's engine.
The $1,000 prize for projects that were the best in their division went to a wall-scaling robot that could be used to clean windows; a redesign of a stretch of King Street; a wireless network for sensing atmospheric conditions; and a wheelchair that adjusts to keep its occupant level on slopes.
The winners were announced at a departmental dinner on Friday. The projects, which were required for the students to graduate, were judged for innovation, technical merit and commercial potential by judges from local industry.
