Gaughan will drive truck races in 2005

Brendan Gaughan, fired last week by Penske-Jasper Racing as the driver of the NASCAR Nextel Cup No. 77 Dodge, will compete in 2005 in at least the 16 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events that are companion races to Nextel Cup events.

In announcing Gaughan's plans for next season, officials at Orleans Racing also confirmed that Steve Park will return to the No. 62 Orleans Dodge truck for a full-time racing schedule in 2005.

Gaughan will drive a second Orleans Racing Dodge in the truck races where he competes. The racing team said further details on the Las Vegan's plans would be announced soon.

BYU picks Mendenhall

Defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall was hired as the football coach at BYU, replacing Gary Crowton.

Fans want bans

A majority of fans say players who test positive for steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs should be banned from baseball and barred from the Hall of Fame. But there is strong opposition to erasing records held by players who fail drug tests, according to the nationwide poll released today by Quinnipiac University.

Illinois, LSU on top

The Illinois men and LSU women remained atop the Associated Press polls. For Illinois, the second consecutive week at No. 1 marked the school's longest run at the top of the rankings.

Nina Kraft was banned for two years by the German Triathlon Union after she admitted taking the performance-enhancing drug EPO in the weeks leading up to the 2004 Ironman Triathlon World Championship.
