People opposed to the establishment of a casino in Singapore have started an online petition asking the nation's president to support their cause, the Straits Times reported, citing three people who helped start the movement.
The petition, from a group calling itself Families Against the Casino Threat in Singapore, or Facts, asks President S.R. Nathan to advise the government to reject any plan to allow a casino, the newspaper reported.
While a casino may provide jobs for 4,000 people, there will be more than that number of families that are broken because of gambling, the newspaper cited Arthur Tan, who helped start the petition, as saying.
The petition, which has been signed by more than 150 people, is located at www.facts.com.sg, the newspaper reported. Harrah's Entertainment Inc. is among the companies that have expressed interest in setting up a casino in Singapore.
