Letter: Property tax freeze allows time for more analysis
Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 | 9:02 a.m.
Finally, a legislator has proposed an idea that makes sense.
The proposal by Sen. Dina Titus to freeze property assessments at last year's level makes more sense than any other idea being proposed. She makes good points: The Legislature needs more than a few months to work out the details on what a property tax plan should be, and there is enough assessments on new properties to cover needed new revenue.
People should stop criticizing and work with her to come up with a long-term solution that will address this issue and give all taxpayers a fair shake. Maybe a cap of 3 percent or 6 percent is necessary, maybe it isn't, but why not take her advice -- freeze assessments for one year and study the issue.
Maybe then we could fix the property tax and assessment issue right the first time, with no need for more special sessions or overtaxing like what happened with the 2003 tax increase.
Give Sen. Titus some credit, and give us some tax relief.
