Letter: Benefits result of Democrats’ work
Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 | 9:03 a.m.
If this were a situation comedy and not so tragic, it would be hilarious to realize that a few more than half of Nevadans voted for George W. Bush. These include many who are scraping along on minimum wages, who were recently denied their overtime pay and who are about to have their Social Security benefits further ravaged.
And besides this "Barney Fife Syndrome" of shooting oneself in the foot by voting against one's own interest, how about the fact that because of Bush, Nevada's earthquake-prone Yucca Mountain is destined to soon become America's dangerous, radioactive nuclear trash can?
Regarding the working, retired and disabled Americans who refused the golden opportunity to vote for Sen. John Kerry: Will we be observing them refusing their Social Security checks, tearing up their Medicare, unemployment and veterans benefit cards, and declining to accept any other vitally necessary assistance in times of need?
After all, these are benefits provided and fought for by the Democratic Party, despite the fierce opposition of the selfish, greedy, right-wing agenda of the Republican Party.
Accepting benefits from the Democratic Party while voting for the Republican Party would be highly hypocritical.
