Rubeli announces plan to retire as chairman, CEO

Aztar Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Paul Rubeli said Thursday he will retire after a 15-year career with the company.

President and Chief Financial Officer Robert Haddock will replace Rubeli, effective March 1. Phoenix-based Aztar, which owns the Tropicana resort in Las Vegas, hasn't yet named a replacement for Haddock.

In a statement, Rubeli said the "timing was right" for the transition as Aztar recently opened a major expansion of its flagship Tropicana resort in Atlantic City. Haddock, 59, has been a senior executive of the company since it incorporated in 1989 and was appointed CFO in 2002.

"Competition has become stiff in Atlantic City after the joint venture between Boyd Gaming Corp. and MGM Mirage opened up the new Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa," the company said in a statement.

Aztar has said it will decide by the end of the first quarter of next year whether it will move forward with plans to redevelop the Las Vegas property.
