Firm approved to find chancellor

University regents will rely on the consulting firm Jan Greenwood and Associates to help them recruit and screen possible candidates to fill the system's chancellor position when Interim Chancellor Jim Rogers steps out of the role next summer.

The Board of Regents search committee voted 4-1 to hire the firm after an advisory committee of system presidents, faculty and students favored the company. Two other consulting firms, A.T. Kearney and Academic Search, also made proposals.

Kearney is already performing the search for the open Nevada State College's presidency, and won the support of regents Mark Alden and Steve Sisolak. Sisolak, as a member of the search committee, was the dissenting vote; Alden was just sitting in on the meeting.

Greenwood is led by two former university presidents, Jan Greenwood and Betty Asher, who together have led 10 searches for university system chief executives, they said. Based in Florida, the company also has extensive experience working within the "spirit and the intent" of open-meeting law regulations, Greenwood said, most recently leading the search for the University of Florida president.

Pending approval of the contract by the full Board of Regents in January, Greenwood will be paid one-third of the next chancellor's salary plus the costs of the search. An exact budget has not been set, but one-third of the last chancellor's salary would be more than $70,000.

The other two firms agreed to cap fees at $60,000.

Former Chancellor Jane Nichols resigned due to health reasons last April, and Rogers, the millionaire media owner of Sunbelt Communications Co., volunteered to take her place. Regents told the search consultants on Wednesday they want Rogers to stay in the position through the 2005 legislative session.

Nichols' base salary was $211,000, and she also received $8,000 for a car allowance and $24,000 a year for housing.
